Retirement (and disability?) Spouse Claims for Same-Sex Couples


The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced that SSA is now processing some retirement spouse claims for same-sex benefits and paying benefits, as a result of the Supreme Court decision on Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. SSA noted that it is working closely with the Department of Justice and specifically encouraged individuals who might be eligible to apply now. A federal court recently held that the same-sex partner of a veteran who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis is entitled to veterans survivors benefits.
