thumbnail MMHFor people with disabilities seeking Supplemental Security Income (SSI), it may come as a surprise that your housing situation will ultimately impact the monthly SSI amount you are owed.

After a finding of disability, Social Security then analyzes the person’s household income, assets, and living situation.  Social Security calls the categories for housing “Federal living arrangement” categories.

In the Notice of Award, people will see that they will be assigned one of four living arrangement categories for each month of eligibility.  Here is a description of each of the four categories:

Each category has a different impact on your SSI monthly benefit, so be sure to alert Social Security if your housing situation changes to reduce the risk of being assessed with an over-payment.
